| Carpet BrandsThe Carpet Industry has gone through an amazing transformation over the last 20 years. In 1987, there were more than 200 carpet manufacturers. The giant producer at that time, Shaw Industries, had annual sales of almost $400 million and the industry sold about $4 billion in carpet. Almost 20 years later, there are fewer than 12 primary carpet manufacturers, annual carpet sales are almost $11 billion, and Shaw carpet and Mohawk Carpet account for almost 80% of carpet sales. During the DuPont StainMaster era, larger carpet producers became more profitable, as every consumer wanted their carpet replaced with StainMaster. Larger carpet manufacturers began purchasing smaller producers, in order to obtain their production capacity and the rest is history. Carpet still survives in a very competitive industry, however. Carpet prices have not kept pace with inflation and carpet remains one of the best flooring values available.
